“To capture images that display the special qualities of the landscape it’s necessary to become intimate with the land. To stay in a location until you understand it’s subtleties, to live outdoors, to sense the essence of weather, light and mood. Occasionally I manage to experience the exhilaration of being in an exceptional place when magic happens, when the sky and all around me glows and the whole world seems to hold it’s breath.”
Andrew Gregory

The life of a field photographer is not for the faint hearted, nor the comfort seeker. Neither does it suit those who depend on finding mechanical or technical assistance near at hand. Andrew Gregory spends months on the road, usually in remote locations, and frequently has to depend on his own resourcefulness.

He has carried out major repairs to his cameras – more than once re-assembling an entire shutter after driving on punishing outback roads had shaken it to pieces - and to his vehicle. Five flat tyres, in one day repaired on the go, remains a record.

A passionate photographer since his school days, Andrew spent some time travelling overseas after studying photography but returned to Australia where he was willingly lured by the huge expanses of Western Australia and the prospect of photographing stunningly beautiful landscapes.

After a surfing accident where he fractured his eye socket and almost lost his sight Andrew decided to travel widely around Australia, seeking out and photographing parts of the country that the majority of people never see. He knows Australia intimately and travels by four wheel drive, boat, canoe, or on foot to reach magical locations.

Andrew taught photography in the past but now spends most of his time travelling on personal journeys or on assignment for journals such as Australian Geographic.
